This little one loved the feel of the sand between her fingers.  She and her purple shadow were content to just move the wet sand from side to side through the trench she had dug.

Pulling Her Ashore
10” x 14”
Oil on Canvas

This “lancha,” or small fishing boat, is being pulled onto Playa Principal by three fishermen with the help of the tide.  I intended for the lighter, horizontal shape of the boat to intersect with the more vertical, darker shape of the fishermen who are painted as one unit.  This opposition creates tension which adds to the narrative of this painting.  The story is about the struggle of these men as they use all their power to pull this heavy boat through the shifting sand on an overcast morning.

Loncheria
8” x 12”
Oil on Canvas

Food carts like this little “loncheria” serve the Mexican version of fast food.  “Comida corrida”  or “meal on the run” does not mean greasy burgers and fries.  Instead inexpensive, yet traditional dishes like tortillas, beans, rice, salsas and “aguas frescas” are prepared fresh daily.  In this painting I tried to convey the warm colors of the strong morning sunlight on the busy little loncheria in El Centro, Zihuatanejo.

Panga Verde
10” x 14”
Oil on Canvas

The panga is the Mexican version of a skiff, a small work boat with an outboard motor which is very durable in the open ocean.  In Zihuatanejo they are used for commercial and recreational fishing and as water taxis to ferry workers and visitors around the bay.  This little painting is about the juxtaposition of the orange tile roofs of El Centro, the downtown area of Zihuatanejo, against all the blue-green color of the water and boats.
