"Cello" 18" x 14" Oil on Canvas
"Cello" was accepted into the Real People 2013 National Juried Exhibition at the Old Court House Arts Center in Woodstock, IL.  The show runs Thursday, August 8 - Saturday, September 29, 2013.  I recently described the young model, a student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, as an overachiever.  She allowed her right arm to be propped up so that I could paint her as though she was playing the cello.  Whenever possible, she would drop her left arm down to give it a rest.  She had a strong desire to get the pose right every time she returned from a break.  Paintings completed in one session are sometimes called "alla prima" which is a term used to describe direct painting in which every brush stroke counts.

A friend who collects art recently hung a wall of oil paintings in the “salon-style” in her home in Sylvania, Ohio.   When selecting art for the salon-style approach, a theme can be selected or the gallery can join disparate types of art and create a dialogue between the pieces.  In this case, the work that is hung together is mostly figurative, but the paintings are all very different. Three of my paintings are hung with other paintings that are more expressive and abstract.  I love how the colors vibrate and the pieces interact with one another.  This collector is telling her own story with the way she has chosen to group the paintings together.

Hanging a salon-style gallery is easy if you follow this approach.  First gather the pieces you would like to hang together.  Using craft paper or newspaper cut paper templates into those sizes.  Identify each template with the name of each piece of art.  Select one or two of the largest templates to be the anchor pieces.  Tape them to the wall 50-60 inches from the floor and about 6-10 inches above any furniture that will be placed below. Gradually add the rest of the templates to your gallery, rearranging as you go.   After you are satisfied with the composition you have created, lay the art out on the floor so you can see how it will look on the wall.  Once you feel confident with your design, measure the distance from the top of each frame to where the wire reaches, and mark that point onto the templates on your wall.  Picture frame hooks can be nailed directly through the paper template, and your gallery is ready to be hung.

During her spring break, Sophie, my friend’s daughter, modeled for me.  Sophie shared her thoughts about modeling and art.

“For the past couple of days, I have been an artist model for Andrea.  There is a little procedure before getting into your poses.  First, I had to curl my hair and do my make-up according to what Andrea wanted, of course.  Second, Andrea picked out the clothes I was going to be wearing that day.  Lastly, you have to make sure that you have a good posture, but be relaxed at the same time.  We picked the poses mainly by just being natural, and then Andrea would decide whether or not the pose would look dramatic.  I would definitely model again. It was really enjoyable.  The part that I honestly did not like was having to hold the same pose for a long time.  My pose was at a piano where I had my elbow on the keys, and that hurt a lot after a while. I would love to be the artist myself because I have a lot of ideas for the pictures I would draw.  I do draw sometimes, but I usually never draw the faces and the hands.  And feet are drawn somewhat irregularly. Some future poses that I would like to try are mainly outside, in a field or on a beach with someone else.  After modeling, I do see paintings and drawings differently.  I would love to have this opportunity again!"
